Changes are coming for how employers pay superannuation.
Payday super was first announced by the Albanese Government on 2 May 2023, with the proposed starting date of 1 July 2026. While this legislation is not yet law, it passed both Houses of Parliament on 4 November 2025.
From 1 July 2026, employers will need to pay super at the same time as wages, instead of quarterly. This means each pay run must include super contributions, paid into employees’ funds within 7 business days of payday.
Employers will need to update payroll systems and processes to align with the change. Penalties may apply if payments are not made on time.
The Small Business Superannuation Clearing House will also be retired from 1 July 2026.
The ATO will release more details as the start date approaches, so now is the time to start planning with your payroll provider.
